I-765 Processing Time 2026
I-765 — Application for Employment Authorization
Typical processing time
2–7 months
Most cases land around 4 months. Ranges vary by service center, field office, and category.
Data snapshot as of July 2026 — check the official USCIS tool for your specific office and category.
What the I-765 is
The I-765 requests an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) — the photo ID card that lets you work legally in the U.S. while a longer application (like an I-485 or asylum case) is pending.
Who files it: Adjustment-of-status applicants, asylum applicants and asylees, F-1 students seeking OPT, spouses of certain visa holders (H-4, L-2, E), TPS beneficiaries, and many other categories.
Why I-765 cases get delayed
- Processing speed differs sharply by eligibility category — OPT cases are usually fast; some pending-asylum categories run slower.
- If filed with an I-485, the EAD sometimes waits on initial processing of the underlying case.
- Card production and mailing can add weeks after approval.
Practical tips for I-765 filers
- Many categories now get automatic extensions of an expiring EAD when a renewal is filed on time — check whether yours qualifies.
- File renewals as early as your category allows (typically up to 180 days before expiry).
- Certain categories (e.g. F-1 OPT) are eligible for online filing, which tends to avoid mailroom delays.
