Most cases land around 8 months. Ranges vary by service center, field office, and category.

What the I-90 is
The I-90 renews an expiring 10-year green card or replaces one that is lost, stolen, damaged, or has wrong information. It does not apply to 2-year conditional cards (those use the I-751).
Who files it: Permanent residents with an expiring, lost, or incorrect green card.
Why I-90 cases get delayed
- I-90 times ballooned in 2025 — a form that used to take weeks can now take many months to over a year at the slow end.
- Cards with USCIS errors are corrected free but ride the same queue.
- Biometrics reuse usually skips the appointment, but new biometrics requirements add a step for some applicants.
Practical tips for I-90 filers
- Your receipt notice now typically extends the validity of an expiring green card by 36 months — carry it with the old card for work and travel.
- Do not file the I-90 for an expiring 2-year conditional card — file the I-751 instead.
- Online filing is available and generally recommended for the I-90.
Waiting longer than 12 months?
If your receipt date is older than the official case inquiry date for your office, you can submit an “outside normal processing time” request. See how the case inquiry date works →
